GOAL 1: End poverty

End poverty in all its forms everywhere: A sustainably managed environment is a prerequisite for socio-economic development and poverty reduction. The natural environment provides ecosystem goods and services that provide income, support job creation, alleviate poverty, contribute to safety nets, and reduce inequality.

Climate change and exposure to natural disasters threaten to derail efforts to eradicate poverty. A large portion of the world's poorest and most vulnerable citizens live in disaster-prone countries, and their numbers continue to rise. Those groups are disproportionately affected by shocks and tensions. As temperatures rise, the likelihood and severity of climate-related disasters that affect lives and livelihoods increase, hamper development efforts, and reverse progress made in reducing poverty.
